VASiSTAS:
First of all, who are you?
Hashimoto Contemporary:
My name is Jennifer Rizzo and I am a Brooklyn based curator, writer and director of Hashimoto Contemporary in NYC’s Lower East Side and Spoke Art. I’m a contributing writer for Beautiful Bizarre Magazine, and have been working in galleries in NYC since 2011, primarily focusing on lowbrow and new contemporary art.
VASiSTAS:
Where can you be found?
Hashimoto Contemporary:
You can find me at the gallery most days (unless I’m running around on studio visits, meeting clients, going to the framer, etc). We are located at 210 Rivington Street in the Lower East Side.
VASiSTAS:
Where can you be found when you are not in this space?
Hashimoto Contemporary:
I spend most of my down time in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. I spend a lot of time in Fort Greene Park with a book and my dog Tubey. If it’s cold out we are probably hanging out at my apartment, practicing cello or with friends out to dinner.
„Having a space on both coasts is extremely important for us, [it] helps us stay on pulse of whats going on in the art world.“
VASiSTAS:
Why is New York the best setting for your space?
Hashimoto Contemporary:
NY is not only a major city, but also considered to be the capital of the art world. The gallery originated in San Francisco, where we are located in the Tenderloin. The NYC space is the second location, which opened about three years ago. Having a space on both coasts is extremely important for us, not only can we offer artists exhibition opportunities in two major cities but it also helps us stay on pulse of whats going on in the art world.
VASiSTAS:
We bet there must have been a lot of great moments during your career. Which one comes to your mind first?
Hashimoto Contemporary:
There have been a few over the years, but I think my favorite moments have been artists positive feedback over the years. Part of my job is to make things as easy as possible for our artists, to hopefully be a resource for them and make them feel they can come to me anytime. It makes me so incredibly happy to hear an artist say, “you made this so easy for me” or “it’s such a pleasure working with you.” I admire so much what they do, and it’s such a privilege to get to to what I love every day. Knowing I’m doing a good job and making things go as smoothly as possible, building good relationships and creating positive interactions is really important to me.
Another would be having the opportunity to curate shows and having the opportunity to work with artists who I find inspiring.
„Creating positive interactions is really important to me.“
VASiSTAS:
Where do you draw inspiration from?
Hashimoto Contemporary:
Everywhere! Artists, the city, travels. By being an active participant in the world, I find that there is a lot to be inspired by on a daily basis.
VASiSTAS:
What is next on your to-do-list?
Hashimoto Contemporary:
Next up I’m curating a group exhibition titled ‘In Formation’ at Hashimoto Contemporary NYC, which will highlight artists emphasizing geometric lines an organic forms in their work. I’m super exited for the exhibition, which will feature new works by: Scott Albrecht, Jeffrey Cheung, Gregory Euclide, Mary Iverson, Erik Jones, Augustine Kofie, Dan Lam and Sean Newport.
VASiSTAS:
What is a must-attend event? What is probably not worth a visit?
Hashimoto Contemporary:
Must attend events for me are always art fairs! Seeing as much work as possible is important not only for artists, but for everyone interested in the arts. The more we expose ourselves to, the better informed we become, and the more defined our personal aesthetic becomes.
Visit the latest show „In Formation“ till February 29, 2020 or see their upcoming exhibition „Liminal Space“ from March 7, 2020 on.
Hashimoto Contemporary is openTuesday to Saturday, 10 am to 6 pm.
Visit their website to find out more about them.
